I'm not sure why I decided to follow Conan O'Brien's Twitter page. I mean, I've been a fan of his for a long time, and was definitely on "Team CoCo" when NBC execs decided to put their heads back up Leno's butt. I'm not a celeb follower though...I honestly couldn't care less what's going on in most people's heads, especially people I don't know. Maybe it was the cute little monkey on his back in his profile pic.
Whatever reason, I'm now hooked. For one thing, it will be interesting to see Conan keep his name and brand viable in the months until he can get another job on TV. For another thing, I'm really curious about the woman he decided to follow at random - Sarah Killen.
This is a really interesting way to use technology and social networking, and not only on Conan's part. He seems to be using it to keep himself sharp, in the public eye, and I can see this Twitter page - combined with his tour - building up to a wonderful crescendo, when he finally does start working TV again. For Sarah Killen, it will be really cool to see what she does with her new found fame. She seems to be a "normal" young lady preparing for a wedding, college, she's socially conscious, down to earth, seems very likable. Getting smacked in the head with a bump from Conan O'Brian has gotta be leaving her reeling though, and I hope that she gets all the benefits that fame and connections can bring without wearing her down.
This is someone who wasn't even trying to do anything except to keep her initial three followers entertained - now she has the opportunity to make more connections and to go as far as she wants to in life. She is raising money for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, pushing for more Haiti relief, and I'm totally impressed with the way she's handling it so far.
How would you guys take advantage of being Conan's only followee? Would you press for charity, as Sarah is doing? Would you want a recurring guest spot on whatever television show he ends up with? Honestly, I think I'd freeze up. That's what I'd do.
