It's amazing that it took so much time, energy, and taxpayer money to figure this out.
Since around 2001ish, my opinionated political mouth has been speechless. I don't argue with my conservative friends anymore. I don't let strangers who hold different views piss me off anymore - it's not worth it. It's never winnable, and no matter which side you're on when arguing politics, you usually end up looking like some cable news jerk who gets paid to do nothing but be mean and scream at people.
With gay marriage, though, it's another story. Banning gay marriage is the equivalent to the Jim Crow Laws and of not allowing women to vote. It's discrimination, pure and simple, and isn't right in any way, shape or form. I realize that to some, it goes against their religion, but as our wonderful country is blessed with the separation of church and state, the religious point is moot. Just as I can't force someone to believe in karma, they can't force me to believe that my gay friends, who have been together for years, don't deserve a legal union.
Marriage does make a difference - that little piece of paper really does make a difference. There is good and bad in it, but mostly good. A solid marriage, complete with a license, contributes to the community in ways that a civil union or common-law marriage can't, and unless that marriage hurts another human being, what's the problem?
As the old cliche goes, "if you don't like what's on, change the channel." If you don't like your happily married gay neighbors who might have adopted children others aren't willing to take care of (gays tend to be nice, that way), build a big old privacy fence and shut yourself off.
Okay - finished ranting over the ridiculousness of it all.
Congrats Cali gays! Let's hope that this ruling will prevent further discrimination in other states.
