Recycled DIY Designs and Donating Goods

August 31, 2010 | Jenny Harvey |

First, I wanted to share these DIY ideas from Earth911.com. Take a look at the designs for jewelry and accessories using old household items. I think these ideas are inspiring and show creative ways of taking junk and repurposing them into totally cool and wearable fashion items.

Next, for those of you who struggle with your creative abilities (myself included), make sure to donate your old clothing and unused household items. That ugly Hawaiian shirt, those jeans that don't fit anymore, that extra toaster sitting in the cabinet, and so on, can really make a difference to those without. Some donation services are so easy it's unbelievable! In fact, tomorrow there is a truck coming by to pick up donations right from my doorstep. They sent me an orange postcard a few weeks ago letting me know when they'd come. All I needed to do was put the donation items out on the doorstep on the pickup date. I'm glad to have all the extra closet space and those in need will really appreciate the items.

Make sure to check with your local donation centers such as Good Will and the Salvation Army to find out their services. Some will actually come get the items from you if you call.

Finally, if you have items that can't be donated, make sure to recycle them. Your local city trash pickup service should include recycling, so get the details and clean out even more junk from your home. Recycling and donating is win-win-win - you get some clutter out of your life, those in need get much needed supplies and the Earth is spared from less junk in its landfills.
