Hope for a "Green" Lawn

June 21, 2010 | Jenny Harvey |

eco-lawn.jpgI planted Kentucky bluegrass in my yard a few years back in hopes to have a lawn that doesn't require much maintenance. The reason for going with Kentucky bluegrass is that the package said it was highly heat tolerant. If you've ever been to Dallas in the summer, you know how brutal it gets. So this type of grass seemed fitting. After planting it, the grass grew, but it's pretty spotty. It seems to hate the shade, because where the trees' shade is, there's hardly any grass. It also seems to need a lot of water because when it starts to become drought-like outside, it turns brown and crispy (even with regular watering). I'm sure if I were exposed to Texas summers day-after-day, I would turn brown and crispy too! So much for my dreams of a low-maintenance, perfect, lush lawn. I refuse to use tons of chemicals and water to have a pristine lawn.

However, I did come across a product that might give me hope. It's called Eco-Lawn. The name says it all! That's right folks, for 2 easy payments of -- just kidding. Seriously though, I might consider going with this product if what it claims is really true, which is this grass will grow in open sun, light shade, deep shade, it's highly drought tolerant (less watering necessary), requires little fertilization and doesn't even have to be mowed! If you don't mow it, it has that shag carpet look, which I think is pretty groovy myself. It's environmentally friendly of course, since it requires little watering, mowing (lawnmower pollution) and harmful chemicals (fertilizer/pesticide). Once again I can have dreams of frolicking barefoot on a beautiful carpet of lush green grass with little harm to the Earth - well, let's hope.
