Love Birds

Love, love love Pie Birds. All of a sudden they seem to be the rage. I've been sort of collecting them since my grandmother gave me one when I was a young girl. It was just like hers - the typical blackbird style with pleading for more upraised chrome yellow beak.

I suppose using a pie bird is sort of old-fashioned, dating back to Victorian times, but it's still practical, effective (usually much prettier than slits in the crust) and turns any old pie into a festive dessert. The birds are way too cute lined up in your pantry, whether one or a flock. Even one implies you actually bake pies - and I think they're replacing cupcakes amongst the foodies this year. Pie birds are inexpensive and make terrific wedding shower gifts, along with a pie plate and favorite recipe.

This month pie birds are featured in Country Living and Martha Stewart Living. Both magazines mention great sources to find out more about their history or to acquire them whether you want to start out, add to a collection. I'm going to start over on my Christmas gift plans and create a pie kit for my cooking buddies, pie birds included. Now I'm looking for more cardinals for my flock of friends.
