Road Tripping with the Man, Part Dva

ftdavis.jpgEarlier this year, after driving with my husband from Dallas to Fort Davis, Texas, I wrote about how I survived the eight hour drive. Here we are again, except for this drive, we decided to take the scenic route through Waco, Brady, and Ozona. And a thousand tiny farm villages in-between. It took twelve hours.

It was much more scenic, for sure. Hill Country is simply beautiful, and the people are laid-back-fine. We managed to make it to this area of Texas desert during monsoon season, and the normally dry creek is full of water, the mountains are wearing cloud caps, and the dragon flies are mating like bunnies. One amazing byproduct of rain and life in this normally dry and cragled landscape is the local social events. The Southwest attracts a huge variety of people, from hippies to militants to retirees to young web workers. They can certainly throw aside the differences though, when it comes to celebrating nature and life in general.

We'll be taking the eight hour drive back, tomorrow, but if there is anything I've learned from twelve-hours-over-two-days on the road, praying the Honda would make it through standing water, it's this: sometimes it isn't the journey that matters, it's where you're going. Whether it's driving forever or getting delayed at the airport on your way to the next World Cup, peace and beauty can be born out of frustration.

Did you drive the full 12 hours or stop overnight? My butt gets so darn sore after 4 hours. My husband has suggested compression socks & leggings for my next drive or flight...

I love your description of the desert so full of life.

And it is definitely the journey, though getting from A to B is so hardwired it's tough to really dwell in the fluid space of now, again and again, without casting out that anvil sized anchor. That's my achilles heel.

Hi Lisa! Thanks so much - it was truly as I've never seen it...just magical. We stopped overnight, thank goodness. Nine hours one day and three the next. My butt was in so much freaking pain! If you try the socks & leggings, let me know how they work!
