Mother Earth

In light of Earth Day, we at YoLadies figured that there couldn't be any better featured woman for this week than Mother Earth. She nurtures us, feeds us, sustains us, and puts up with a lot of crap from us. She's old but still strong, gentle but tough, deep and tall, and we love her. Here is her story, in a very small nutshell.

photo of earth from space courtesy NASAMother Earth started her role as a life giver more than four and a half billion years ago. She began by sustaining the tiniest of small organisms, and gradually began to harbor larger and larger creatures. She has watched lovingly as these creatures have evolved into different and more complex beings, and even if she might have had the slightest sadness at seeing them grow up, she let them be and continues, to this day, to help them succeed, even if it's to her own detriment. She, interested in genealogy and in retaining a family history, has left us a huge number of fossil records so we could know exactly who we are and where we came from.

Although she was known to be quite the hothead in her earlier years, she has since mellowed, and even has an "ice queen" side to her. She nurtures all forms of life in even the coldest of climates, and has made sure that they have the tools they need to survive.

Mother Earth has never had an issue with being third from the sun rather than having everyone revolve around her - she is far too busy with all of her children to worry about adulation from outsiders. Just as one part of her has the chance to rest, the other part of her wakes and starts its epic and colicky buzz, screaming at her for more and more - she is glad that the other planets just stay out of it and let her get the slight bit of peace that any mother gets.

The most amazing thing about Mother Earth is the optimism that she still shows, through her love of spring flowers and new life, sharing with us and reminding us that epic and colicky buzz isn't all that she's here for. She prides herself in her best features, and hopes that we all can appreciate them, as well.

MSNBC has some of the best slideshows around, and this one shows some of Mother Earth's most beautiful features in the US.

Thanks Mother Earth for everything, even if we couldn't get any direct quotes.

Not only does she nurture and protect, Kim, she's still a bad-ass broad who kicks up her heels every once in a while and reminds us why she's not to be trifled with:
