To me, drinking organic milk is not only good for the environment -- it's also good for me. Yes, milk in general can be beneficial to your health, but when I say it's good for me, I mean it on two different levels. Besides the vitamins, calcium, and other health benefits, I love the way it makes me have a subconscious smile on my face from my sheer enjoyment of the pure deliciousness. I guess my point is, regardless if you put extra effort into being kind to the environment or not, buying organic milk is simply worth its level of quality. Contributing to a healthy environment is a major plus, nonetheless.
My personal choice for organic milk comes from Horizon. I remember recommending it to my Mom, and her immediate reaction: "Ew, does it taste all right?" Well, needless to say, my mom buys organic milk now. I think a lot of people probably have the automatic grossed out reaction when the word "organic" is brought up. The truth about organic milk (and organic foods in general) is that you are getting a higher quality product, not just some tasteless cardboard filler product that calls itself food.
When compared to the factory "cheap" produced milk, the facts themselves can really sway you to buy organic. There's no use of antibiotics, pesticides, cloning, synthetic colors, or artificial flavors. Yuk. All of the above may be found in non-organic milk. I must quote directly form the Horizon Organic carton: "We figure it's all connected. Eliminating chemicals from milk production creates a healthy environment that supports healthy cows, healthy family farms, healthy communities and a healthier planet."
One weekend morning, my husband and I decided to make us a nice, hot breakfast. We realize we are out of milk right when it's needed as an essential ingredient to our perfect start of the day. He runs up to the nearest gas station (to save time) and buys a gallon of milk. Of course Valero does not offer organic milk. We finished cooking and poured a glass of the milk for each of us to drink. I could taste an odd chemical flavor, but nothing along the lines of milk. I'd have to compare it to what the flavor of roach poison might be. Maybe I'm gratefully spoiled by the deliciousness of organic milk. From now on, I will go the literal extra mile to get my organic milk of choice and feel great about doing another little thing for the environment with very little effort and lots of enjoyment.
